protophoto.com seems to fit in that second category. This site is taking a tour of the mountain west with pictures of Utah, Wyoming, Idaho, Montana and Colorado.

This gallery has thousands of images. The galleries are linked together. In theory, you could travel from town to town and see all the pictures.
