Amtrak is one of the best ways to travel through red rock country. The California Zephyr runs from San Francisco through Salt Lake to Green River, Utah (50 miles north of Moab). The train takes a spectacular ride along the Colorado River to Grand Junction.
If you are planning a vacation, consider saving gas and take the train.
